What Is Global Warming, in simple terms ?
Actually, Global warming become a new religion. We frequently hear about the number of scientists who support it. But the number is not important: only whether they are correct is important. We don’t really know what the actual effect on the global temperature is. There are better ways to spend the money.
This whole controversy about global warming or even evolution – politicians just don’t want to take the time to educate themselves.
In simple terms, Earth’s equilibrium, a place of stationary temperature experienced by our Earth from past ten thousand years, has been affected by the greenhouse gases. But how? Let’s start from the basics. The Earth receives radiation from the sun and warms itself. The amount of radiation at the top of the Earth’s atmosphere is determined by the distance of Earth from the Sun and from the sun’s energy in radiative flux. As this electromagnetic radiation comes in, part of that is immediately reflected from clouds back up into space. Another part of the incoming solar radiation is reflected by the surface of the Earth and some is absorbed by the earth and warms the planet. Through blackbody radiation, planet Earth, also radiates energy back into space.
The attacks on global warming are no different than the attacks the cigarettes companies used to use to say that cigarettes don’t cause cancer.

The crucial and basic facts of all of this is that the incoming radiation is in the form of visible light or ultraviolet radiation of relatively short wavelength and the radiation out of the earth is a bit longer wavelength called infrared radiation. That’s where the greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, some industrial chemicals) play a key role, since they are transparent to the incoming short wavelength solar radiation, but are not quite transparent to the outgoing longer wavelength radiation from Earth. In fact, they absorb the outgoing radiation in part, and that traps energy that otherwise would go out to space. This phenomenon creates a kind a blanket called the greenhouse effect that keeps Earth warmer and makes it habitable to us. Here another question comes. Why only some gases are responsible for this effect and not all. As we know atmosphere is predominately composed of Oxygen and Nitrogen.
But these gases have only two atoms. For any gas to be a greenhouse gas, it needs three or more atoms. This phenomenon was explained by Tyndall in 1861. Then came Arrhenius who demonstrated back in 1896 that if there is an increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere we’re going to get a warming. That is why we say the science of climate change is more than a century old.
The Greenhouse Gases are important. Without this greenhouse effect our earth would have been 33 deg. C cooler than what it is today which means to say that the current average global temperature of around 14 deg. C would be of negative 18 to 19 deg. C. However, the problem is that the atmospheric carbon dioxide level, which was constantly below 300 ppm for over ten thousand years, has now crossed 425 ppm. Over 125 ppm increase in just 250 years! Most of other greenhouse gases also exhibit similar trends. This has shifted the temperature equilibrium of earth resulting in global warming.
If we take the average global temperature now and compare it with pre-industrial revolution period, there is an increase of about 0.9 deg. C. It’s not a constant warming every year, there’s a lot of variability. In fact there are even episodes like the one from 1940s to around 1970s, where there wasn’t much warming and that raises a lot of questions and skepticism. The most probable cause for this phenomenon is the widespread emission of sulphate aerosols in to the atmosphere by both natural volcanic eruption as well as the industrial emissions.
A sudden drop is also sometimes associated with the switch in the practice of collecting Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) data from US ships to UK ships post WW II. Therefore, we cannot keep on cherry-picking small discrepancies in the otherwise clear trend that shows that the planet is warming and that too at an alarming rate. It is perhaps time for us to understand the consequences better and to take serious action.
In Simple terms global warming is just like warming up your room during winter season by burning woods.We use fire to warm up room and raise the temperature. As soon as we turn off the heater the atmospheric temperature matches the room temperature and room cools down again.
In case of global warming the greenhouse gases forms a blanket in upper layer of atmosphere and prevent the loss of heat which eventually raises the global temperature.
In simple terms greenhouse gases prevent the loss of heat. Sun rays coming from the sun is reflected by the earth surface and sent back to the space. In this case this reflection of rays are prohibited by the greenhouse gases.
Can growing plants help reduce global warming?
Global warming (climate change) is being caused by increasing concentrations of carbon and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. These concentrations are increasing because the global carbon cycle is out of balance.
The global carbon cycle is the dynamic exchange of carbon between the atmosphere, the oceans, the land, and plants and animals (the biosphere).
When we extract and burn fossil fuels, we are releasing vast quantities of carbon into the atmosphere. By growing more plants we are increasing the capacity of the biosphere to absorb carbon, thus helping to bring the global carbon cycle back into balance.
People don’t need to overtly grow plants to reduce global warming. Plants are opportunistic, if you just ignore any plot of land it will fill with vegetation without any human intervention. A person growing plants is just substituting a plant desirable to humans over one that would have naturally occurred. Even the cracks in sidewalks will have plants growing in them if you don’t periodically clean them.
If we want to utilize the benefits of plants in reducing global warming we would be a lot better off making the built environment more plant friendly. I saw one estimate of 61,000 square miles of paved roads and parking lots in the U.S. Add the footprints of all the houses and other structures to that and all the fields cleared of trees to grow seasonal ground crops. Planning our lives and economy toward sustainability with success not measured by maximum consumption could have an effect. Smaller houses, mass transit, and leaving as much of the environment as possible in a natural state could have an effect.
In fact, coal is believed to the result of huge forests growing and the resulting trees being buried before the wood rotted. Over millions of years, the trees converted to coal. Thus those trees successfully sequestered CO2 for millions of years.
Overall, I would say growing large trees is the best thing you could do along these lines, and secondarily buy and keep wood furniture.

- It is not good enough to say that a reduction in Global Emissions by 2050 will reduce both the trend and the average Global Temperature.
- Paris 21 will go down in History as the biggest failure of Governments to deal with the biggest Problem to ever face mankind – Climate Change.
- How can a temperature rise whose rate of change is increasing everyday be suddenly reversed when we do not have the method of decision to ensure that reverse. Paris 21 is not mandatory – are we insane?
We do not have an accurate, secure and verifiable data stream ,which we can use in a real-time replication of our Planet’s systems, to state if the temperature increase is going to be 2, 4 or even 10 degrees higher. We do we have a system of calculating the parameters of the equation, that are needed to prioritize our response to climate change.
- What is the point of planting a forest of trees if it makes absolutely no difference to climate change unless it is planted in the right position?
- Paris 21 will take our $100 billion a year and like AID money will be used to fill corrupt organisations and governments bank accounts.
- Until we secure our data stream and use a model which we can use to replicate the parameters and effects of our changes to the pressure systems of our Planet, the rise could be as much as 10 degrees.

Deforestation has become a massive undertaking by humans and transforming forests into farms has a significant number of impacts as far as greenhouse gas emissions are concerned. For centuries, people have burned and cut down forests to clear land for agriculture. This has a double effect on the atmosphere both emiting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and simultaneously reducing the number of trees that can remove carbon dioxide from the air.

Tropical forest trees, like all green plants, take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen during photosynthesis. … And this is how deforestation and forest degradation contribute to global warming. According to the best current estimate, deforestation is responsible for about 10 percent of all global warming emissions. Imagine that situation… ?

That means holding their suppliers accountable for producing commodities like timber, beef, soy, palm oil and paper in a way that does not fuel deforestation and has a minimal impact on our climate.
Companies should set ambitious targets to maximize the use of recycled wood, pulp, paper and fiber in their products. For the non-recycled products they buy, they should ensure that any virgin fiber used is certified by a third party certification system such as the Forest Stewardship Council.
But these corporations haven’t taken action on their own.
That’s why we’re investigating, exposing and confronting environmental abuse by corporations. Thanks to your actions, major companies are changing their ways and building solutions to protect jobs and our forests.
Global warming is a fact. Now it’s up to liberals to make it a reality. Hence there is crucial importance in preventing powerful, greedy free market forces from getting in the way of worsening storms and rising sea levels. The Kyoto Accord is a good first step.

करीब 2 अरब साल पहले पृथ्वी पर जलवायु परिवर्तन का एक ऐसा दौर आया था, जिस जीवन के लिहाज के सर्वनाश का काल माना जाता है। धरती के जलवायु और मौसम में इतना बदलाव आ गया था कि कई प्रजातियां इस बदलाव के साथ खुद को अनुकूलित नहीं कर पाईं और हमेशा के लिए विलुप्त हो गईं। धरती के इतिहास में यह दौर इसलिए काफी अहमियत रखता है कि इसी दौरान सबसे ज्यादा प्रजातियां विलुप्त हो गईं। अब इसपर रिसर्च कर रहे शोधकर्ताओं ने दावा किया है यह सब कुछ ग्लोबल वॉर्मिंग के कारण हुआ। वैज्ञानिकों का यह भी कहना है कि 2 अरब साल पहले हुई यह घटना अब दोबारा हो सकती है। रिसर्च के मुताबिक, उस समय धरती का औसत तापमान 29 डिग्री सेल्सियस से ऊपर चला गया था। वर्तमान में पृथ्वी का औसत तापमान 15 डिग्री सेल्सियस है। वैज्ञानिकों का कहना है कि अगले 10 साल के अंदर तापमान में बेहद गंभीर बदलाव हो सकते हैं।
धरती पर रहने वाले 90 फीसद जीव खत्म हो गए थे
धरती पर रहने वाले कुल सजीवों में से करीब 90 फीसदी प्रजातियां इस घटना के कारण विलुप्त हो गईं। 2005 में छपी एक किताब ‘लाइफ नियरली डाइड’ में बताया गया था कि इस दौर में जीवन करीब-करीब खत्म होने की कगार पर पहुंच गया था। ऐसा किस वजह से हुआ, इसे लेकर वैज्ञानिकों के कई पक्ष हैं। इसे लेकर काफी बहस भी है। किसी का कहना है कि किसी उल्कापिंड के धरती पर गिरने के कारण ऐसा हुआ, तो कुछ मानते हैं कि किसी बड़े ज्वालामुखी विस्फोट के कारण यह घटना हुई। कई वैज्ञानिक इसके पीछे जलवायु परिवर्तन और ग्लोबल वॉर्मिंग को कारण मानते हैं। अब कनाडा, इटली, जर्मनी और अमेरिका के शोधकर्ताओं की एक टीम ने कहा है कि यह सामूहिक विलुप्ति किस कारण हुई, इसका उन्होंने पता लगा लिया है। वैज्ञानिकों ने कहा है कि उनकी शोध के नतीजे पूरी मानव जाति के लिए बहुत बड़ा सबक देते हैं। वैज्ञानिकों ने कहा है कि अगर उनकी रिसर्च के नतीजों पर गौर किया जाए, तो मौजूदा जलवायु परिवर्तन की चुनौती का बेहतर तरीके से सामना किया जा सकता है।
ज्वालामुखी विस्फोटों के कारण कार्बन डाईऑक्साइड की बड़ी मात्रा हवा में घुल गई। इसके कारण धरती का औसत तापमान 8 डिग्री सेल्सियस से बढ़कर 11 डिग्री सेल्सियस हो गया। बढ़े हुए तापमान के कारण समुद्र की सतह में बंद मिथेन गैस की बड़ी मात्रा पिघलने लगी, जिस कारण तापमान और ज्यादा बढ़ता गया। यह तापमान इतना ज्यादा बढ़ गया कि धरती और समुद्र में रहने वाले ज्यादातर जीवों के लिए जहर जैसा काम करने लगा। शोध के नतीजे में बताया गया है, ‘कार्बन डाईऑक्साइड की बड़ी मात्रा के वायुमंडल में मिलने के कारण धरती का तापमान काफी गर्म हो गया, लेकिन इसके कारण जब मिथेन पिघलने लगा तब इसने सर्वनाश का रूप ले लिया।’
अब भी बन रही हैं ठीक वैसी ही परिस्थितियां
मौजूदा जलवायु परिवर्तन के लिए चुनौती देते हुए इस शोध में आगे बताया गया है, ‘यह दौर इंसानों के लिए एक अहम सबक है। ग्रीनहाउस गैसों के उत्सर्जन, ग्लोबल वॉर्मिंग और जलवायु परिवर्तन के कारण हम आज जो मुश्किलें झेल रहे हैं, उसके लिए इस दौर में हुआ घटनाक्रम बड़ा सबक साबित हो सकता है।’ रिसर्च के मुताबिक, अब भी वही परिस्थितियां सामने आ सकती हैं। आर्कटिक की परतों के नीचे दबा मिथेन गैस पिघल सकता है और इसके कारण धरती का तापमान काफी ज्यादा बढ़ जाने की संभावना है। वैज्ञानिकों के मुताबिक, अगले 10 साल के अंदर ही जमे हुए मिथेन की बड़ी मात्रा पिघल सकती है। अगर 50 गिगाटन मिथेन का उत्सर्जन होता है, तो इसके कारण धरती के तापमान में 0.6 सेल्सियस की तत्काल वृद्धि हो जाएगी। और अगर ऐसा होता है, तो ग्लोबल वॉर्मिंग बेहद चिंताजनक स्तर को छू लेगा।
